Never Say This to a Bartender

Bartenders have unspoken rules that unfortunately too many patrons break. Here are 15 things bartenders told Buzzfeed to NEVER say to your bartender unless you want to face their wrath!

1) They HATE when you use the bottom of your bottle to call them over. According to this bartender it makes him want to "do stuff to the bottle."

2) Be patient and don't act entitled. Bartenders are humans too!

3) If you plan on having at least couple drinks, open the dang tab. This bartender said that constantly opening and closing individual orders slows down service for everyone at the bar, including you! So if you want better service, help the bartenders do their job more efficiently.

4) Don't be rude! This bartender hates getting called lame nicknames like "barmaid" and "serving wench" even as a joke.

5) Remember that bartenders aren't just cheap therapists, they're professionals offering you a service! This bartender wants you to remember that they're not your employees. So be polite, patient, tip, and TIP!

6) One bartender had a helpful tip for Guinness drinkers. "ALWAYS order your Guinness first. [It] needs time to settle once it's poured."

7) Have you ever asked your bartender "what beers/wines do you have?" Maybe check the menu next time or at least offer some drinks that you like as well. This bartender said "I need at least a style so that I can help you fid something you enjoy... trying to throw 30 random beers at an indecisive person can be time consuming and a little annoying."

8) Don't forget, bartenders are professionals offering you a service, so don't be cheap and ask for a "hook up" on the price. "Don't tell me to 'hook you up' on the first drink I'm making you. You hook me up with a generous tip, and then we can go from there. Big tips go a long way."

9) Don't ask them to "make me what you feel like" or it's alternative "surprise me." One bartender said it "pisses [them] off to no end" and another had this to say - "So, whisky neat it is then. Seriously, never say this to a bartender. Just order what you want or ask for a suggestion based on a flavor profile that you like It's not cute or helpful to be indecisive."

10) This should be an obvious one but apparently it isn't - don't talk bad about another bartender. They're probably going to assume that whatever issue was your fault due to your obvious lack of decorum. If there is a genuine issue that needs to be sorted, ask for a manager.

11) Here's another obvious one - Don't be aggressively flirtatious! "A lot of people will think it's okay just because you as the bartender are being amicable and it's interpreted as flirting." Remember, part of being professional is being friendly. Let them do their job without being creepy!

12) Think you know more than the bartender does? Think again. "Don't give me unsolicited bartending advice." They don't show up to your job and tell you what they think you're doing wrong!

13) "Don't ask what my 'real job' is." Who does that!?

14) Think that being loud will get you noticed by a busy bartender? Eh, not so much. "One trick is this: Sit at the bar patiently, make eye contact with the bartender who's around you, and SMILE. A warm smile is very welcoming in the chaos, and they more than likely come to you first over the a**holes whistling and waving their cash and slamming the bar."

15) Remember, bartenders get pretty busy! "Don't expect top-notch five-second service on a Friday/Saturday night at 9pm. Be patient and smile, and say please and thank you."
