#GoodNews: Bus Driver Volunteers As Reading Teacher

Herman Cruse is a school bus driver in New Jersey. 2 years ago, he overheard a student talking with his teacher about a reading assignment that he didn’t get done. He offered to help the student since he was done with the morning bus route.

Herman said, “It started with one, and then it just got contagious.”

He now volunteers his time between bus routes as a reading tutor. He meets one on one, three days a week for several hours with kindergartners, first and second graders in a corner of the school. His program is called “Mr. Herman’s Kids.”

Herman said he loves seeing a child discover the joy of reading.

“It’s like unlocking a door. I can see the lights on in their eyes.”
