We now know where the word "dude" comes from. 

The word was first used in the late 1800s as a term of mockery for younger men who wore fancy clothes.

Later it was used for clueless city folk. And finally became our label for laid back guy.

But where did the actual word come from? Allan Metcalf spent 10 years researching it, and he's published his findings in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Apparently, dude first came from the song Yankee Doodle Dandy. -
