The L.A. Department of Water and Power has hired more water monitors - to help enforce drought rules.

Three new specialists have been added to the team that follows-up on complaints about water-wasters. The DWP’s Rick Silva says even though the enforcers can issue fines, the priority is informing people about the rules, like limits on sprinklers and runoff.

"Sometimes they’re just not aware of it," says Silva.

"Their sprinklers might be going on early in the morning or late at night, so it’s just a matter of communicating and educating them.”

Silva says most people have been following the rules. He says awareness increased after the Governor made an official declaration about the drought.
