Facebook can see what you're typing even if you change your mind and don't post it.

The social network says it's within its terms of service to be able to see what you're writing before you hit post.

Facebook confirms it can track unpublished posts after two researchers working for Facebook said they'd watched the activity of about 5 million random users in the US and England.

There are two ways you can keep Facebook from seeing what you type - one, don't use the service, or two, turn off Javascript in your browser. But without Javascript many websites won't work properly.

Javascript is also how services like Gmail can save drafts of emails you're writing before you send them.
