Disability Advocates Say Judges Stripped Voting Rights

The Disability and Abuse Project filed a complaint Thursday with the U.S. Department of Justice alleging Los Angeles County Superior Court probate judges routinely strip developmentally disabled adults of their right to vote for failing to pass a literacy test.

That test was made illegal by the federal voting rights act of 1965, said Project attorney Thomas Coleman, and said adults under limited court conservatorships should have their voting rights restored.

“The test should be, if somebody can articulate, with whatever method they have, I want to vote, that’s the test,” Coleman said.

He estimated thousands of voting-age adults have been impacted by the court decisions.
